So, why did I buy the Kindle version of The Red Box? I read all of my books these days on my Kindle App (on my iPad). But, I have owned every Nero Wolfe book in physical format for decades. Mostly paperbacks; some in their original paperback version, others in a reprint version. I own a few of them in hardback. I re-read them all about once a decade, and am working through them again during the great pandemic.I was deep into The Red Box, and discovered that my old, worn, ragged copy had lost some pages. So, I immediately bought it on Kindle, and finished the book. Thank goodness for Kindle. No need to review the book. You either know Nero Wolfe, and Archie Goodwin, and Fritz and Theodore and Saul Panzer and Orrie and Fred, and Inspector Cramer, or you don't.There was a time in the last century when Rex Stout had more Nero Wolfe books in print than any other author. I discovered him sometime around my jr. high-high school years. He is the only author I re-read, pretty much ever. The Red Box is a fine addition to the corpus. But, don't start here. Probably, start with his first: Fer-de-Lance. I would then go to the Arnold Zeck trilogy pretty quickly. (Consider Zeck to Wolfe as Sherlock's Moriarty). But, most of all, let Archie Goodwin beckon your loyalty. That's what makes the books so very readable.Do I recommend The Red Box? Of course; no more, no less than others. Another inventive, engaging, Nero Wolfe mystery. Enjoy!(The image is of a few of my well-worn paperback Nero Wolfe books).
