Read Creative Teaching for All as an antidote to rapidly growing pressures for quick and easy teacher results, and constant evaluations. Employ creative ideas to resist teaching to the (usually factual) test, and to the many choking rules, standards, cores, and state regulations that strangle motivation and destroy experimentation.Reclaim teacher control of curriculum design and instructional methods across all fields by boldly going ‘outside’, even off the walls, where teachers have lived happier lives before the invention of rubrics and rules.Become the truly creative teacher to which you have aspired!Highlights of the
I would highly recommend this book to all teachers, or those who are interested in the field of teaching. In fact, I believe this book should be a required reading for all education courses, and for all teachers, as a means to further enhance their creativity in the classroom. Moreover, I believe that this book should also be required reading for professional development workshops in schools across the globe. I can personally relate that as a teacher of social studies, who strives to teach outside of the box, and yes, even go off the walls at times, I often reflect upon Dr. Zevin's brilliant, and innovative ideas as a means to actively engage students through teaching history through mystery, while stirring their minds with controversial discussions, and debates in the classroom.Ultimately, Dr. Zevin's groundbreaking work has helped me, and my colleagues become more engaging, and creative teachers. In the classroom, I observed that upon utilizing the methods suggested by Dr. Zevin, students consistently demonstrated greater motivation, and were more actively engaged during each lesson. They also were able to develop their critical thinking skills, and increase their global awareness. This was accomplished through their thoughtful evaluation of various historical perspectives on any given topic, rather than just passively learning history through society's accepted status quo, which has been traditionally taught in our nation's classrooms. If only all teachers taught using "Creative Teaching for All" I sincerely believe that more students would actually retain, and apply the ideas, and lessons which they learned in their social studies class, as creative, and critically aware citizens of the 21st Century.
