If you want a complete copy of the massive epic that is the Mahabharata, this is the one to get. There simply is no comparison to the other multi-volume sets you'll find anywhere else (That includes the kindle version, and I own both the kindle and physical boxed sets).Sure there are other collections being translated, but they are (mostly) incomplete and are still being published, this is the one of the few that really covers the massive scope of the story in a complete package. There's the M. N. Dutt 9 volume set as well, which has the Sanskrit text, though completely discounting the price difference between the two sets this one still comes out ahead for me. I ended up gifting my Dutt volumes away and keeping this one for myself.I also much preferred the writing here to Ganguli's translation, and good luck finding a complete printed set of Ganguli's version that comes anywhere near the quality of this boxed set. Everything from the size of the font in the printed version, to the translated prose, elevates this one to the top for me (though I know that opinion is going to be contentious)I really didn't find anything wrong with the paper quality of the books (and I own thousands of books). To be honest, if you're nitpicking about the quality of paper when buying a one of a kind complete set like this that exists nowhere else, you're going to end up waiting many more years for one of the other editions to be completed. The paper was a complete non-issue to me, and at no point in reading them did the thought ever cross my mind.If you're investing in a complete Mahabharata, I'd recommend starting with kindle copies of the first volumes of the various versions available to make the best decision. Nobody can tell you what translation is going to be easiest for you to digest, but you can certainly find that out on your own without having to buy the whole set at once.Note: If you're going to get this box set, also get Debroy's translation of Harivamsha, the "epilogue" to the Mahabharata. I also highly recommend watching Debroy's presentations on the Mahabharata available on youtube that he has given.I liked the book set's contents, the packing, the delivery, the price. The only drawback is: the printer could have used a slightly higher quality paper. Well, paperbacks are printed on standard paperback paper, so, what can I say? I might have bought if the set were available in a higher quality edition, but it was not.Suspend your preconception on what is supposed to be real -- just read and immerse in a different reality -- I'm 90 so hope I can stay here till I complete the reading. Got a chuckle out of the reviewer complaining about the quality of the paper. LOL, I tend to read & value words rather than playing feelie with the paper, but to each his/her own.A very good book and easy to understand. Worth buying. The boxed-set arrived so carefully and redundantly packaged as to survive a nuclear exchange. Circa 1784, Sir William Jones (after studying Sanskrit in India) stated: "the warriors of the Mahabharata appear greater in my eyes than Ajax or Achilles appeared when I first read the Iliad." That is why I brought the 10-book set.Okay I'm only volume 3 in (but I have read fully his translation of the Ramyana). Bibek Debroy knows what he is doing when he translates texts! This will be my recommendation for years to come! Other translations seemed a little dual, but I feel Debroy captures alot of the true emotion going on in the text... he has translated several other texts at this point I'm a follower!A friend of mine recommended and I ordered it on the fly (not expecting much) or with somewhat high expectation however it really exceeded my expectation from well packaged delivery, books itself. Going thru volume 1, it is packed with information and very very well explained.Excellent job!I can't wait to dig into the full translation of the Mahabharata! As always though, Penguin books delivers a beautiful quality product. Love it!Dear Sir MadamI recently purchased the complete 10 volume set of the MAHABHARATA translated by BIBEK DEBROY Thanks for the excellent quality of printing and packing and also the good translation But certain ERRORS need to be ABSOLUTELY CORRECTED in the next edition In Volume 10 Page 682 the original shloka of the Bharata Savitri is dharmat arthascha kamascha sa kimartham na sevyate and the CORRECT translation should be Both Artha and Kama follow from dharma if so why is Dharma not followed and the INCORRECT translation by BIBEK DEBROY is If Dharma and Kama result from Artha why should one not pursue Artha In Volume 3 Pages 596 597 598 with regard to YAKSHA PRASHNA Three very important questions and answers are omitted 1 How is real Brahmanatva recognised 2 What is the greatest wonder and 3 What is the news But otherwise we are extremely grateful to BIBEK DEBROY for this massive undertaking REVIEW SUBMITTED BY SWAMI VEDANTANANDA PURIAbsolutely riveting. Although it is a translation of the unabridged version , the author adds his subtle nuances that keep it from going very dry . For me this is the best original version that there is of the greatest compilation ever. This a great translation of the Mahabharata, following on the BORI edition exactly and without any interpretation and retelling by the author. Many other translations are a loose retelling with embellishments and additions such as Ramesh Menons fantasy-genre version. This is one is as close to the original Sanskrit as you can get and is very readable.Swestbooks, the seller was brilliant. Item arrived sooner than predicted, very reasonably priced and was well packaged. Would recommend seller and book both.Arrived slightly late but seller communication was good.very nice set of books. If time is not major concern - as it arrives from India , then it’s great value for money . Will recommend.I have to clear doubts of some of the people here1. Description of number of pages is wrong in book info here . Actual number of pages is more than 5k as each book is at least 500 pages long .2. Quality of paper is good !3. Box arrived in perfectly fine condition and it had even transparent plastic paper covering on it .4. Every book is big enough so that it can be read without any issue .Now if you check number of pages in seperate book online and number of pages of same book from set , they are slightly less but I think content is same in both books .If you buy each book individually it will cost you more than 6k and 3500 is best price you can get (with Amazon prime trial , it got delivered for free in two days for me ).So don't doubt ! Go for it ! I am very happy and now my inner Mahabharata geek can dive into these amazing books !
