Six CD set. Street Punk - as a genre - was Great Britain's second-generation of punk rock which, behind chants of Punk's Not Dead reigned in the UK approximately between 1980 and 1985. For many, Street Punk puts into practice those postulates that in punk's first generation were only ideals. Street Punk is aggressive, street-based, fierce and mostly, their artists only record on independent labels, making them substantially different from the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Generation X or The Stranglers, whose albums appeared in major labels. The Street Punk Box Set is a fantastic summary with the best of the genre, including it's main (The Exploited, Anti Pasti, Anti-Nowhere League, Vice Squad, Chron Gen, The Business, Blitz, The 4 Skins, The Adicts, The Ejected and many more). There are more than six dozen songs by incendiary British incendiary bands, with powerful songs, war anthem and lots and lots of attitude.
This is a 6 disk compilation of UK punk rock from the early to mid 1980's for under 20 bucks which is a great deal. This compilation seems to utilize in part the 3 volume Punk and Disorderly compilations that came out from 1981-1983. Most of my favorite songs on this comp I had already come across on the Punk and Disorderly releases. Those favorites include: Violators - Summer of '81 & Gangland; Action Pact - London Bouncers; Abrasive Wheels - Army Song; The Partisans - Police Story; Vice Squad - Last Rockers; The Outcasts - Mania; Angelic Upstarts - Woman in Disguise and One Way System - Stab the Judge. Its more apparent that the Disorderly comps were used since whomever compiled this collection - which explicitly states "The second wave of UK Punk Rock" mistakenly included "Kill the Poor" by the Dead Kennedys who are American. This song was among the songs on the Disorderly comps - which highlighted mainly UK bands but also threw in a US band every now and again, such as the Germs and D.I.There is about 2 dozen more songs I had never heard before which stood out to me and I enjoyed. Most especially songs by Abrasive Wheels - Burn 'em Down & Vicious Circle. Conflict is an interesting band which has almost a metal sound and the song "To Whom it may Concern" had some insanely fast drumming, probably not surpassed until speed and death metal came around. Two songs that are a bit goofy but annoyingly catchy are "Chinese Takeaway" by the Adicts and "Shadow" by The Lurkers. The real gem for me was the song "Breakdown" by Chron Gen - this is a masterpiece of punk rock.If you're into the first wave of British Punk Rock (Pistols/Damned/Clash etc.) you should continue your journey by discovering the 80's bands, either by purchasing this set at an awesome price or by doing a search on Amazon for "Punk Singles Collection" which is a title under which many compilations in this realm where released, both British punk independent label compilations and also "best of" comps by many of the more prolific bands.
