Wow, what a difference!Cheese graters hardly seem like the kind of thing you ever have to actually buy, don’t they?! It’s been about 20 years since I first realized that moving out of your folks’ place meant having to buy all the random, inconsequential devices of 21st century living: extension cords, spare lightbulbs, mixing bowls, measuring spoons, Pyrex containers, a can opener... et.al. I’ve NO idea how or where or when I managed to secure a cheese grater, though it’s safe to assume mom probably had an extra — or at least that’s what I told myself when “borrowing” hers for a Taco Tuesday party,ANYWAY...I’ve essentially been using that same grater — some generic, $5.00, hand-me-down hunk of metal for the last two decades wholly ignorant of the fact I’d been grating cheese with what was practically a sheet of metal with some oval stamped into it. The fact it finally broke apart meant I was suddenly in the market for a cheese grater — a surprisingly exciting endeavor considering the fact 6 months of sheltering-in-place has turned even the most insignificant of tasks into worthwhile expenditures of a seemingly infinite amount of time to waste. But enough about me!Enter the OXO...I imagine you’re here —reading reviews on a freaking cheese grater— bc either A) you too have far too much SIP-time on your hands or B) you’re a long-standing OXO fan and simply wanted to confirm THIS product upholds the same high quality design and build you’ve come to expect from OXO.To cut to the chase... it absolutely does!Don’t you just LOVE that OXO grip?! It’s brilliant... it’s simple... and it makes all the difference, doesn’t it?! No matter how insignificant the device, OXO throws on a nice cushioned rubber grip (if only they started making toothbrushes!). And on this cheese grater, that grip makes it not only nice to hold, but it’s thickness and anti-slip material help keep it firmly in place while never wearing out your hand. But what’s more... those little design geniuses at OXO put that same grippy material around the bottom of the grater!! This thing is SECURELY planted my grating friends!! And it just has a great feel whenever your set it down: a plate, a cutting board, even those pricey granite countertops... whatever you grate in, it’s firmly planted and doesn’t make a sound.I bought this one believing the ingenious little plastic container that attached to the bottom would be the hallmark of this great grater and the reason for the extra splurge in expense budget (and that didn’t disappoint!! That TOO had a fully rubberized bottom... so even when it’s grater to container to granite countertop, you’ve STILL GOT fantastic grip!). But it’s undoubtedly all the well-placed rubber.I know it sounds like I’m exaggerating — I mean, it’s rubber, how big a deal can it be? But I promise, whatever either grater you’re considering... no comparison. Perhaps you’re considering that one that’s half the price...?!?!FOOLISHNESS!!Graters are a 20-year purchase folks! Use an inferior product for over 7,000 days of your life JUST to save the equivalent of 3 caramel macchiatos?!Or perhaps you’re considering that “clever” one with those creative new features... the ones you’ll never actually use. Skip it and go for the things that matter most:1.) excellent design and highest build quality2.) comfiest grip, stable/rubberized bottom, mountable plastic container3.) sharp, effective holes that make grating far less of a chorePLUS!!! As a sort of bonus... you get TWO sizes of cheese: “normal” and thin.So.... “YES” is the answer to your question: there rubber-grip-grater is yet another excellent product from those real American heroes over there at OXO!!I like the feature that allows the supplied container to be attached to the bottom of the grater. My only wish is that they provide a way to purchase additional containers and maybe containers with larger capacities! It works well and at the time was slightly cheaper than the Kitchenaid one. The collection cup is a nice feature. The assortment of cutters allows this to slice and shred everything from vegetables to sold cuts. The box is incredibly handy to contain the results until you're ready to use them. Solid and stable.Works great, sturdy and way better than basic types. Easy to clean too.glad I bought this one. I will just say this to everyone, be careful that the grates on it are sharp as my thumb will tell you :-). My own fault. This is a great product.Difficult to hold a bit and can’t keep the bottom part on it.This was our first Oxo item purchased. They've made a fan for life! My hubby is attending culinary school, but has been cooking for many years prior to formal training. He wanted a good grater that wouldn't take knuckles along with the food being grated. The Oxo Good Grips is positively perfect. The sturdy design will last for many years. More importantly, it was also designed with the safety of the cook in mind. The broad handle easily fit my husband's broad "man hands" (you guys know what I mean - women's hands can fit in much tighter handles most of the time), giving him a secure grip on the grater. This is super important. Some graters have a very narrow handle area, leaving it either annoyingly tight or comfy only for women. There is an additional anti-slip black ring around the bottom, making it very unlikely to slip on the table/counter surface. This particular grater even offers an extra convenience - a small plastic storage box with snap on lid for storing the food you have grated. While not great for big quantities, of course, it would be great for parmesan cheese or freshly grated spices. The storage box is even marked with measurements so you can easily see when you've reached that 1/2 cup (or whatever) of grated ingredients for your recipe. It pops on to the bottom of the grater if you choose to use it, so the food goes directly into the container. No fuss, no mess.I would not change a thing on this grater, that is how nice it is. Well, okay - I'd add an OPTION, not a change. It would be nice to see some other colors added some time down the road. (Most of our kitchen is done in John Deere, so green would be nice! Hint hint!) This was a very well-thought-out design and we are glad we bought it.We also are very glad we purchased the item from Amazon. It was packaged in the same box as a cast iron dutch oven (ordered at the same time), which wasn't the best idea. The first grater came dented from the weight of the cast iron sliding in to it. We followed Amazon's spectacular return information, had the bad one back in the return mail to them that afternoon and received the replacement grater the following DAY! Yup - one day. Outstanding service by Amazon.Overall, nothing negative to say! We highly recommend this item, as well as purchasing it here on Amazon's site.Pro's: nice and sharp, grates cheese in an instant, easy cleaned, comfortable to hold. Con's: There is a thick black rubber seal around the bottom of the grater. Now l know it's to stop the grater moving while you're grating, but as far as I'm aware, it doesn't come off for cleaning - at least I can't get it off! So cheese remnants get stuck in the inside, where the rubber meets the metal. This is what you can expect from OXO. Easy to hold and to use, with a very useful container that goes under the grater to collect the cheese or whatever you grate. The rubber bit on the bottom comes off so you can clean it easily. Never again will I buy a cheap grater when I can get this instead. The grater itself is great (no pun intended). It's sharp and efficient and, as a grater, works very well.My issues, and the reason I've knocked off a couple of stars, relate to the plastic box that sits under the grater to collect the grated food. I'm being picky about this because this grater was more expensive than a regular grater presumably because of this little box and the OXO brand, so I expected good things for the extra cost.My issues:1. The box is way too small - not obvious from the photo of the item. If you're grating food that has volume (like cheese). It gets full very quickly. Then you have to stop, take off the box, empty it, re-attach it and carry on - I'm exhausted just thinking about it. Now I just grate straight into a deep bowl, without the box2. When you grate using any grater, bits of food will fall off in various directions. Typically you'd be grating into a bowl or similar, so you'd catch these bits easily. However, if you're using the plastic box then the bits fall outside of it, e.g. onto the kitchen counter - again, not a big deal - but it's messy3. When you build momentum with your grating, you have to be careful because the grater can fall off the plastic box quite easily (there isn't much attaching the two) so you can end up with food spilling out - again, more mess4. And finally, the little box did not come with a lid although I see from the product pictures that a lid exists - so looks like I missed out. I only just realised this as I was writing this review and since I have already disposed of the packaging, I can't return it - again, it's another little disappointment to add to the list.Usually I love OXO products, but this time I have been left somewhat underwhelmed. Still, if this is the only thing I have to complain about, then life is good.My old grater had trouble keeping its handle on. It had lasted years and I was a bit taken aback by how much graters cost. -thought a fiver would have got me a good one.Decided to go for this one as I have oxo brand potato masher and honestly can’t fault it. It’s so comfortable. This is well made and sturdy too. I don’t know that I’ll get much use from the plastic box. But nice to have that option. It’s very sharp. Tell your kids to be careful when they wash up.Love Oxo items as suffer from Arthritis and Fybromyalgia, my hands are really bad and the lovely big soft grip on the top of the grater is lovely as protects the pressure on my hands. The little box to grate the item into is a good idea but not sure how long it will last if pressure put on it but Love the fact it stores inside the grater. Cleans very well and the rubber grip around bottom can be pulled back to clean around it, gently pull back though as don’t want to stretch it too much and make it slack. Definitely a good buy.
