Product Description

Gilbert and Sullivan without Gilbert! Before the two met, Sullivan had already written a number of operas, including "Cox and Box" which is more of a musical comedy revue or farce. The version always heard since the early 1900s is the heavily truncated D'Oyly-Carte production, often played as a curtain-raiser. This is the ORIGINAL full length version (still only an hour long) of 1866, and is this "live" recording is a re-enactment of the very first performance which took place at the home of librettist F Burnand. A must for all lovers of operetta, musical comedy and vaudeville. Full libretto included.

A solid production, complete with dialogue, and I found the dialogue as well played as the music. "Cox and Box" is not only of great interest as a work by a young Sullivan just learning his way around the comic-opera form, and as a prime example of what Victorians loved to laugh at: it wears very well, and one can easily understand how it could make it way into the G&S repertoire. While a good visual performance on DVD would be my ideal whenever I want to enjoy the entire show (as opposed to its musical numbers alone), this recording is probably the next best thing possible.
